Microsoft Exchange at a glance

Looking at the Exchange Server services in more detail, the following features are particularly noteworthy:
Email services: Microsoft Exchange Server manages both internal and external email communication. Access can take place through the default web browser, Microsoft Outlook, and the Outlook Web App, and other solutions.

Working together: Groupware is designed for teamwork. All single user features can also accessed as team features.

Calendar and scheduling: As well as managing their own calendars, users can access shared calendars across the team. This makes it easier to plan meetings and check attendee availability. The shared calendar for scheduling meeting rooms or car pools is a classic example of this in companies.

Managing contacts: Users can store both personal and business contacts. It allows you to centrally manage and share contacts so that they can be shared by employees. You also benefit from a simple, structured way to manage and search for addresses.

Security features: Exchange Server provides a number of security features to ensure that all email communications and sensitive data are protected. These include email encryption, authentication and archiving. This effectively protects users against spam, viruses and phishing.

The online and server versions compared

Exchange Server is available in both on-premises and online versions. The on-premises version comes as a software package to be installed on the user's hardware server. Standard and Enterprise Editions are available, depending on the needs of the company and the size of the workforce. For smaller companies with less than 500 employees, the Standard Edition is sufficient, while for larger companies the Enterprise Edition is recommended. The latter supports up to 100 mailbox databases.
VENDOSOFT offers the following on-premises versions:
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 Standard
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 Enterprise
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 Standard
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 Enterprise

The online version is a Microsoft service as part of a purchased cloud subscription. No dedicated IT infrastructure is required and it is operating system independent.
In practice, there are no major functional differences between the online and server-based versions. The only difference is that updates to the online versions are always rolled out first. However, the server versions of Exchange Server 2016 and 2019 also receive regular updates basis for as long as they are supported by Microsoft.
A hybrid use of server software and online version is also possible. Our Microsoft Licensing Professionals will be happy to advise you personally on the appropriate licensing.
